MALE FACTOR Stress reduction in male infertility patients: a randomized, controlled trial
نویسنده
چکیده
Objective: To assess the impact of preparatory information about the fertility workup on the patients’ well-being. Design: Two-group, randomized controlled study. Setting: An andrology clinic. Patient(s): Two hundred fifty men enrolled for fertility workup. Intervention(s): A two-page leaflet with preparatory information about the fertility workup, which was mailed to half of the participants after they had made an appointment. Main Outcome Measure(s): Questionnaire score for infertility-related distress at clinic attendance, proportion of participants that still had not attended 6 months after the scheduled appointment. Result(s): Distress scores and the proportion of nonattendees were significantly reduced in the group receiving the leaflet. An additional analysis revealed that 55% of the receivers did not know that the andrology clinic has its own web site, which was mentioned in the leaflet several times. Conclusion(s): Although it is uncertain how many patients actually read a routinely sent leaflet, preparatory information in written form is beneficial, at least for a significant subgroup of men who consider undergoing fertility workup. Fertility services might reduce the number of nonattendees by sending out leaflets. (Fertil Steril 2005;83:68–73. ©2005 by American Society for Reproductive Medicine.)

Zeta Sperm Selection Improves Pregnancy Rate and Alters Sex Ratio in Male Factor Infertility Patients: A Double-Blind, Randomized Clinical Trial
Objective Selection of sperm for intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is usually considered as the ultimate technique to alleviate male-factor infertility. In routine ICSI, selection is based on morphology and viability which does not necessarily preclude the chance injection of DNA-damaged or apoptotic sperm into the oocyte. Sperm with high negative surface electrical charge, named “Zeta p...
متن کاملEffect of Ceratonia siliqua (Carob) syrup and vitamin E on sperm parameters, oxidative stress index and sex hormones in infertile men: Protocol for a randomized controlled trial
Background: Spermatogenesis is a necessary process in fertility and reproductive capacity of humans. In view of the relative high prevalence of spermatogenesis disorders in men and the failure of treatments provided in conventional medicine, new therapeutic approaches are being considered. This study will be designed to investigate the effect of Ceratonia siliqua (Carob) syrup and vitamin E on ...
متن کاملLycopene and male infertility: do we know enough?
Supplementation of diet with antioxidants has been studied in other areas of medicine. Sommer et al.6 discuss the example of Vitamins E and C, which have been associated with a reduced risk of cataract formation in observational studies. The seemingly beneficial effect of a reduction of cataract formation with Vitamin C or E supplementation was not replicated in a well-designed randomized contr...
متن کاملOxidative stress and antioxidants for idiopathic oligoasthenoteratospermia: Is it justified?
Oxidative stress contributes to defective spermatogenesis and the poor quality of sperm associated with idiopathic male factor infertility. The aim of this study was to review the current literature on the effects of various types of antioxidant supplements in patients to improve fertilization and pregnancy rates in subfertile males with idiopathic oligoasthenoteratozoospermia (iOAT). Review of...
متن کاملMebeverine for Pediatric Functional Abdominal Pain: A Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Trial
Introduction: Few studies are conducted on the efficacy of antispasmodics in the treatment of functional gastrointestinal disorders in children. We evaluated the effectiveness of a smooth-muscle relaxant (mebeverine) in the treatment of childhood functional abdominal pain (FAP). Materials and Methods: Children (n=115, aged 6-18 years) with FAP were randomized to receive mebeverine 135 mg...
